That being said... I have had some time to think about my feelings toward the manual setting, and I have finally come to a decision: I would rather be poked in the eye with a fork rather than use the manual mode. I actually had to resist throwing my camera in front of a car this afternoon. I took 72 pictures in less than 20 min, and this is the best that I ended up with.

I don't know if its the rinky dink camera that I have, or the moving toddler, or the amount of sunlight outside, or my lack of experience with the settings... but I was not happy with the results. If I actually get the nerve to pick up my camera anytime soon, I am going to try to glue the knob to auto. *shudder*

okay see, now i gotta throw failure quotes at you!!

get out there and keep shooting! don't you dare give up!! it also helps to carry a notebook to jot down what you're noticing as you shoot. light, settings, etc. don't you dare give up woman!!
Yup, what she said.
Manual is scary at first, but...
DON'T use auto. Ever Again.
EVER.
At the very LEAST, use the semi-manual modes - in particular - the AV mode. Glue the dial on there for awhile. Dial it down as low as it will go (I did the tutorial on my blog about this if you need a refresher) and shoot away. Then, take note of what the camera chooses for the other settings (shutter speed and ISO)and that will give you a better understanding for the changes in settings in different locations.
Keep work'n at it...one day it will all click.
no pun intended.
First off let me say that you two are a butt load of help. I am LOVING the tips and advice you both give. So keep it coming! :)
Second off, I have calmed down about the manual mode. I am hating it a bit less today, and I will try to give it another try. :)
Thanks a ton!
